What does the app do?

The app shows how to make speech sounds and words.

There are 3 activities.

Basic’ where you can select the sound you want to practice.

Random’ where you select more than one sound to practice and the app will select your words at random. This is more difficult than the basic practice.

Rhyming’ where you can practice saying rhyming words.

In the ‘Basic’ and ‘Random’ activities you will see a video showing you how to say the sound or word.

The activity will also record you saying the sound or word and play it back to you.

What did our aphasia testing group say?

The aphasia testing group liked:

  • The app is easy to use.
  • You can choose what sounds and words you want to practice.
  • There is a ‘lite’ version of the app which can be downloaded for free.
  • The app has videos to help show you how to say a sound or word.
  • The groups liked that the videos were from a real person and were not a drawing.

 “I like that it records me saying the word so I know how I did.”

Our aphasia testing group found some parts challenging.

  • Getting used to an app takes time.
  • Some group members did not like the Australian or American accent.
  • Some group members felt they needed someone to demonstrate the app.
  • You cannot add your own words or sentences.
  • Our group testers who did not have apraxia and who had mild aphasia found the app too easy.

What did a speech and language therapist say?

This app could be useful for people living with motor speech difficulties like apraxia.

Some people with aphasia may also have apraxia.

The app is helpful for people who benefit from hearing and seeing how a sound or word is made. 

The videos are clear and help show how to say the sound or word.

The app records your voice saying the word or sound.

This lets you check yourself.

The app is easy to use.
