This research aims to develop a new method of teaching self-management skills after stroke by investigating how physiotherapists work with stroke survivors and carers.

This research will develop a new self-management programme for stroke survivors with aphasia and their families, to help them to adjust to and manage their lives after stroke.

The STEPS service in Northern Ireland will offer emotional support and counselling for stroke survivors and carers/relatives, as well as a series of self-management workshops in partnership with Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke (NICHS).

‘Supported self-management’ is the help and support offered to stroke survivors and their families after they have left hospital. This research will look at what does and doesn’t work to help stroke survivors and their families to self-manage.

We’re now funding stroke research in every nation of the UK. Come with us on a trip around Britain, to explore some of the projects aiming to improve people’s lives after stroke.

This research will help understand the role of the relationship between a stroke survivor and the health care professional to improve the outcomes of rehabilitation for the long-term.

Our Stroke Recovery Service provides tailored support commencing in the acute hospital setting and continuing in homes, by addressing the long term practical, emotional and physical needs of stroke survivors and carers.

Dr Niki Chouliara, Professor Adam Gordon, and the rest of the TELSTAR team are developing recommendations for how stroke rehabilitation can best be delivered remotely.
